Is there any app and/or trick to save the current start screen configuration and later recall it?

Not that I can tell. I assume Microsoft will address this issue in future updates.

I know its primitive, but I take screenshots of my start screen before resetting the phone.

akin to this would be the ability to manage the start screen via the desktop in a similar fashion to iOS.
that way i could move the tiles around on a larger screen.
