    What do they do, exactly? When I go to Settings>Applications, I see the apps that run in the background without being open, but does that affect the Live Tile at all? Because I LOVE Live Tiles, so I don't wanna jeopardize them, but I don't want all these applications running in the background.

    These apps are not running in background all the time.
    these background agents (official name) are running every 30 min or so just for a short amount of time.
    depending on the app, this might be to update a tile but also for connecting to the web for syncing data.
    i would not care to much about the background agents.
