On the iWhat 5 you can turn off sound to the phone while enabling a notification (ringtone or text message notification) for individual contacts. That way when I'm on call I won't get harassed by sounds from the phone in the middle of the night but if work calls the phone will ring or their text message notification will play.

How do I do that in WP8?

You might be able to work around this for the time being though.. create a blank 20 second sound clip, set it as your default ring, and set your work contact as a custom ring.
