I have a couple of friends who are in denial about thier aging eyesight who want to know if the fonts sizes are adjustable especially in the text message area. I know it is not in WP7.

It is.
settings > ease of access.
'This changes the text in phone, people, email, messaging, and lock screen.'

Outside of that, you can use screen magnifier. You can also enable that in ease of access.
"To magnify, double-tap with two fingers. To pan, use two fingers. To change the magnification level, use two fingers to double-tap and hold, then pan up and down."

xcharles ... thanks that's good to know ... do you know if the ,as yet unreleased, wp7.8 update also includes this ability to change font size ?
