For all those think Samsung products are Uber-cool and niche, they are nothing but cheap plastic, and cheap cheap plastic..., guess you can never emphasize enough CHEAP CHEAP...
Just check this video:

My opinion of Samsung really was tarnished with the lawsuit that Apple put against them. Argue all you want, there was some outright copying of iOS' interface - like contacts, for example - and some of the Apple trademark designs, like the Galaxy Tab 10.1.
Just my opinion, I even owned an SIII for a bit. - 10-09-2012, 02:15 AM

All I see is a light, shiny, beautiful device.

I work with multiple people who have the Galaxy S3. And it is the cheapest feeling phone I think I have ever felt in this decade. I would imagine it's why they have them stuffed in massive gaudy cases.

To be honest, I don't care what the case is made of. If the case is at least sturdy enough to not destroy the screen the first time it falls from a desk, then I'm ok. Samsung builds attractively thin devices and, unless that 920 screen is uber impressive, the best screens on phones, period.
I am probably going with the 920, but the ativ could be a spoiler when I see that screen in person.

Some people still had the old HTC mentality. That a heavier phone is somehow more sturdy.

plastic does not necessarily equal cheap. A bendable back plate probably means that it can take more of a beating and probably wouldn't crack if it were dropped on the back. I also have played around with a GS3 and never thought it was 'cheap' or 'flimsy'.
And the Apple lawsuit against Samsung would make me want to buy a Samsung device just to say 'up yours' to Apple. - 10-09-2012, 11:28 AM #15
I have a Samsung Focus and can relate to the "flimsy" back cover. There's a part that doesn't close well. Might have happened during a period where I wasn't using a case. Regardless, it's not the flimsy back cover that kills the ATIV S for me, it's the utterly boring, uninspired design that does.

Watching the Nokia bashing of Samsung is surreal. You are aware that those "polycarbonate" 920s are "cheap plastic" too, right?!? :P

It certainly seems like the Ativ is going to feel a little cheap on the outside, but let's not forget in many respects it has the highest specs of the WP8 line-up. It feels to me that Samsung piles all their investment into internals whilst others have been investing in the phone designs. Whilst that won't appeal to everyone, people looking for the absolute top specs for their cash will likely find the Ativ the perfect purchase

Wierd, I thought the same exact thing. Prior to seeing this, I thought the brushed aluminum of the Ativ was at least nice and had a refined look to it even though I thought the phone was pretty blah. But at that exact moment, when he took off the cover and bent it, was when I changed my mind and really thought that it was pretty cheap. Disappointment. I am using a Samsung 23 inch monitor right now for my desktop which I absolutely love, I've always loved their TV's and thought everything they made with a screen on it was gorgeous. My opinion is now changing.
Thanks

Jay, I'm totally down with what you are saying, and I think you're right.
However.....
I think true inspired design combines both the form and the function, the other Manufacturers have been doing that and people are responding to it positively. I like seeing them go the extra length, and those other phones have some pretty nice specs to boot. It's what has me going back and forth between Nokia and HTC and not even considering the Ativ. ;)
Thanks

I think it looks sleek and sharp.
FYI...its bendable plastic for multiple reasons. 1 - durability 2 - size and weight 3 - metal is just bad on a phone.
I think all the announced WP8 devices look good. - 10-09-2012, 02:28 PM #25
this is a good looking phone, and although i used to think plastic made a phone feel cheap... it is practical. metal can interfere with reception and glass is fragile. the plastic does make the phone MORE durable; scratch resistant, shatter proof.
and after seeing the nokia 820 on verizon, this thing is beautiful!!! :PWP Central - Super Member
