I have set up a media server to help stream some video, music, and pictures to my device. For this purpose I use TVersity. Anyway today I tried to stream a video - the application is set to transcode to WMV - and it came up instantly "Sorry, we can't play this file on your phone." I've tried restarting the server, and I've tried restarting the phone to no avail.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Have noticed this on their devices?
EDIT: Have found this to happen regardless of device. WMV, Mpeg Transport Stream, and MP4 seem to be affected.Last edited by Bearach; 02-04-2013 at 12:23 PM.

Hi, i have the same problem. Before upgrading to 7.8 i could stream to the phone using windows media player 12 as dlna server. wmp12 has the capability to transcode on the fly to the phone, but not the capability to pre-transcode file....using another dlna server, kooraroo, which has the capability to pretranscode files i can see them again, but only after pre-transcoding....Let me know if you obtain other informations.....

I've been looking for a workaround, but Windows Phone 7.8 just will not play on-the-fly transcoding files.
It can be replicated on every device I've tested. So others definitely have this issue too, but don't realise it yet.
If the file is already in the correct format and doesn't need transcoding, it will playback correctly. - 02-10-2013, 10:51 AM #6
Sounds like its seeing the original format of the video and that is why its rejecting it. As you know the phone does no transcoding so its not an issue with the hardware. Might just need an app update so its not looking for the file format until it has already started to process the video on the server Have you emailed the dev?

TVersity does on-the-fly encoding to varied formats. I've got it set to WMV for the purpose of streaming to the device. It isn't attempting to open the original format in anyway. You can use the IE browser to access the media server, and to play the files on 7.5 (as it would stream directly into WMV, and would be named _f_.wmv for example). Unless the file is in the correct format, and is fully completed in it's state, it does not play. Also if it did see the original format, format? It would see it's H.264 MP4, which as you know Windows Phone can play. This is definitely an issue with playing back a file that has to be transcoded to stream.

the only way i found in order to stream to the phone is to use dlna servers that have the capability to pretranscode files, for example Kooraroo (the best i found), Mezzmo, Nero kwik media... Do you think that we can inform Microsoft of this problem ? What is the best channel to do that ?
Thanks - 02-11-2013, 02:14 PM #9
Hello, Microsoft Windows Phone developer's team know this issue but for now not noticed bugfix for this issue. I spent more times for investigate and when posting question in developer forum I received this answer.
