I'm simply spectating, but the Surface RT preorder was ten days before the device was set to release. I wouldn't rule it out for the Pro. Its a bad move on their part to not have a preorder due to demand and lack of availability(within fair proximity) for customers.

My closest store is an hour away.

Yes but it looks like they did reservations AND pre-orders for the RT. I'm hoping they will do the same for the Pro.
