Mine did this. The accelerometer was stuck and I had to shake it and tap it pretty hard against a semi-soft surface (I used my shoe sole) and it began to rotate again. I've heard of a few others fixing it this way.

Sometimes you can fix hardware problems yourself yea, but you have to get the device apart which will void your warranty.
I am not sure about this problem yet, but if it will be a hardware problem, it will be time to make use of the warranty, and get a replacement from the store you got it from, or let it send in for repair by them.

Shake the s%$t out of it. Then hit it with a rubber mallet. If that doesn't work, back over it with your car. The phone can take it. Just try not to scratch it.
