The matte lumia 920s at my store had scratches on the back where the chastity belt is. They weren't very deep, but it showed the lighter color of the polycarbonate underneath, and were pretty thick. I am concerned about the rubber grippy coating layer on the matte lumias. They don't seem very rigid or durable. It's kind of soft and seems easily scratchable or peelable. Anyone have experience with previous lumia 800/900 phones and can comment on the matte coating durability? I know the 900 feels different than the 920, so it might not be the same coating. The glossy lumias also feel much harder and more rigid. I'm just hesitant since the glossy ones might get greasy easier. Greasy is icky.

what coating layer? The body of the Lumia 920 is a polycarbonate and doesn't have a coating.

My guess is the display Lumia 920 has scratches from being handled a few bazillion times. I've had my matte black 920 since day one with no issues.

I have a few minor scratches on my black 920 on the back, but it's to be expect and isn't bad.

No scratches on my black 920, but the surface is starting to rub-off about an inch-up from the bottom in the middle.

I had this exact thing happen to mine after a couple days of use. Same place even. I ended up returning it and getting an invisibleshield for the new one. I'm glad I did. In addition to the protection, the phone is a lot more grippy now.

Weird. My understanding is that the Nokia 920 is made out of a solid piece of policarb plastic that is the same color throughout the plastic. In other words, it should be impossible that the surface is different from the material underneath. Send us a pic so we can see what you mean!

The black and cyan models have a matte covering not unlike the "Rough" surface of many laptop touchpads , whereas the red, yellow and (I think) white models are smooth/glossy.

I'll have to get a hold of a camera to take a pic. I'll do that as soon as I can find one. ;)

I've seen users refer to what CapnPauly and I experienced as "staining." And that's possibly what it is. All I know is that it doesn't come off, and it's looks like a worn matte finish.

Stains on my Matte Black 920
920 warranty and matte black stains
Stains on the back of matte black?

There's a thread somewhere where Daniel said he got this "staining" on his test 920 and attempted an explanation.

Perhaps it is. Either way it is rubbing off, and thus, annoying me.

Sorry Kooosh, I was replying to George's reply (I hadn't seen yours).
Odd thing, George; your post is showing at 11:01p where it is still only 10:18 in my TZ.

I'm interested in seeing the pictures too.

Everything I've seen is that the matte and glossy colors are simply different finishes of the polycarbonate.... not coatings.

No clue on the time stamps....

Now.... I have a little discoloration (you can see it in the Lumia 920 Camera Guide post) where there are dark streaks on the phone. Personally, I think it's due to the warmth the wireless charger creates.

Can't say that it's a bother but noticeable.

For what it's worth, the staining/wear on mine preceded delivery of the wireless charger. I don't think that's what's causing it.

I understand what you mean by rubbery coating. Mine rubbed off my black 920 after a few days. Now my phones texture is similar to the One X. Also my phone has some areas where its lighter and shinier spots. Kind of wishing I got glossy.

I personally think that the plastic material that Nokia is using on the 920 is slightly different from that on the 900. My matte black 920 has scratches on the back plastic when it's only ever carried alone in my pocket, so the scratches are just from rubbing against the tablet. I noticed the scratches merely weeks after receiving the 920. Meanwhile, my matte black 900 was used the same way for something like 7 months, and the back plastic is still 100% intact.

... Though of course the camera 'chrome' on the 900 is scratched to ****, and the ceramic one on the 920 is still perfect.

    Hey all,
Sorry, I forgot about this until today. See the enclosed screenshot to see what I was referring to. I haven't tried the microfiber cloth cleaning yet, but I will over the weekend and let you all know how it worked.

Doesn't come off no matter what you do, yeah? As I mentioned, I had the exact same thing on the exact same spot. Good job capturing it with a photo.

That's the problem with matte, color rubs off too easily.

Yep. I tried a couple of different microfiber cloths, but nothing has helped.

I don't know if this is a "Stain" on the surface or if it really is rubbing off, but it certainly seems like the latter.

Lol @ chastity belt - great description :)

My black 920 (purchased 11/9) is still in perfect condition - no rubs, mars, stains, etc. I always carry it in a microfiber sunglasses bag, and use wireless charging stands to charge it.

I think being careful enough and having at least a hardcase to protect it, my Lumia 920 should be ok, so far so good no scratch on screen or body of the phone. If you're planning to leave your phone naked then you should expect scratches/stains, it's just the nature of how things work xD
