I just got my Lumia 920 last week. So far, I really like the device. I chose it over the 8X because of the PureView camera (after MUCH research), but I'm just not that satisfied with the photos it takes. Does anyone else agree, or do I have a defective device? Here are some test shots.

So....what do you think. Anyone else agree? I had an iPhone 4 before this. The camera was 5.0 megapixels. It did not do that well in low light, but it took photos that were generally much higher quality than this, in my opinion (more detail, sharpness, and color accuracy).

1. They look fine to me. Third one seems to be taken at very low light though which I'm sure is still much better than any iphone and Androids.

2. Your uploaded images are not in full resolution. You might want to change the upload settings.

3. Skydrive images usually appear ever so slightly less sharp than if you download the same images to PC and view them using Windows Photo Viewer or something similar. It's been like this all along. Maybe they downrez them to save bandwidth?

4. Make sure you understand the concept of depth of field (DOF) if you don't already. Lumia 920 has a wide aperture lens (f/2.0) for improved light gathering capability. Wide aperture comes with shallower DOF, especially for close-up shots. Object out of the shallower focal plane will appear somewhat out of focus on close-up shots. This is a desired feature, not a con.

5. Don't press down the shutter button in one motion. Always use the half-press or tap-screen method to get AF to lock.

I don't see anything wrong with the first two, though the third is rather grainy. I love the camera on my 920, though I'm coming from an HTC Droid Incredible and am not a big picture person.

which is precisely why you don't see a problem with the first two pictures. They look like they've been taken with a defective auto-focus camera

And be sure to watch that video in 1080p. I think it was way better than the video my small Sony point and shoot takes, so yeah, this phone is a keeper!

I love Everclear, but mainly their first three albums. After that they started to soften their sound. Still some good stuff, though.

But anyway...that's very impressive video and audio from a phone's camera.

There's a little more softness than I'd like in some of my daytime pics, but overall I'd say the camera is well above average and in low light its superb, nothing short if the 808 can touch it. Have a look at page 13 in the Lumia 920 pics thread if you want to see what kind of results I've gotten.

Oh man.. those dried mangos from Trader are amazing!

Anyway.. I think the camera in the 920 is pretty much on par with the rest of the phones available from the carriers with couple of nice additions such as HAAC mics, OIS, and relatively better low light performance. Yes, the iPhone 4s and the 5 take slightly better photographs during the day, but they are really bad at night/flash, and the sound recording on both is awful.. pretty much in line with all the other smartphones out there, except the 808.

In fact, if you really care about image quality and photography in general, there is only one smartphone that can potentially satisfy your needs.. Nokia's phase 1 pureview device.

i've been a bit disappointed so far, definitely some issues with softness/focus. But based on the fact that some pictures come out great, and the review units didn't have these problems, I'm pretty confident something is "off" in the final production software that will be fixed in an OTA in the next few months.

That it what I'm hoping for as well. I can honestly say that I agree with the OP, A lot of the pictures I take aren't terrible they just aren't great. I never had these problems with my ^prepares for rocks to be thrown* iPhone.

^ which iPhone...all of them before the 4s were pretty bad. They had the saturation tuned so high on the 4 it used to make a rainy day look sunny... the 4s and the 5 are good enough.

Now, consistency is very important.. if you have to take 3-4 shots to get one that is acceptable, that is no bueno.

I've noticed that the auto mode for ISO and whatnot is crap. I get much better pictures in any condition where it's not perfectly lit by changing the settings myself instead of using auto mode.

In low light I usually snap a picture at ISO 400, Exposure 1/3 and leave mode at Auto (unless im doing a close up) and see the result. Depending on how that looks I might change some settings. Basically I try to walk on the line between noise due to higher ISO and overexposure. I suck at taking photos but I can get them to turn out decently by not just relying on auto for everything.

Try only taking pictures by tapping the screen. I've had my best results that way.

Also, if there's movement try a negative exposure. I found the lights at a concert more than adequate, but the movement was blurring the shot on 0.

I'm having the same problem with the camera, matter of fact I have no confidence in it. I believe my BB Storm 9550 took much better pictures. The majority of the pics that are posted on here taken by the camera are washed out and or hazy. And if there are lights involved for example, Xmas lights, forget it, the camera gets very confused. These are the same pics some describe as amazing. With that said, I will be keeping my 920 because I like it that much. Will just not continue to be the photographer I once was. I certainly understand what you are going through.
