Hey guys. I got the Windows Phone HTC 8X yesterday and I was testing the different types of NFC Tags.
The NFC App I used was NFC Launchit and the tags are from buynfctags.com. Here are my results. Hope this info helps you when you buy nfc tags. Let me know if you have any questions
If you need to NDEF format the tags, you can use NXP Tag Writer (Android) to format most of the tags below. If you don't have an Android phone, companies like buynfctags.com can format them for you for a small cost.
Chip Chip Type Memory Write Tags with HTC 8X Read Tags written by Android Phone Topaz512 Type 1 454 bytes Yes. *No Need to NDEF format first. Yes NXP Ultralight Type 2 46 bytes Need to NDEF format first. Yes NXP Ultralight C Type 2 142 bytes Need to NDEF format first. Yes NXP NTAG203 Type 2 142 bytes Yes. *No Need to NDEF format first. Yes Kovio 2Kb Type 2 230 bytes Yes. *No Need to NDEF format first. Yes NXP DESFire EV1 (2K), (4K), (8K) Type 4 2046, 4084, 7678 bytes respectively Need to NDEF format first. Yes NXP Mifare (1K) and (1K CL2) MifareClassic 716 bytes Need to NDEF format first. Yes NXP Mifare (4K) MifareClassic 3356 bytes Need to NDEF format first. Yes NXP Mifare Mini MifareClassic 190 bytes Need to NDEF format first. Yes
EDIT: NXP Tag Writer doesn't format the Mifare Mini tag. I had to use the GoToTags Windows NFC App to format it.

Sorry for the confusion! The NTAG203 is the best one to get. It is already formatted so don't need to worry about the tag not working. It has 142 bytes of memory so that it enough for programming things like wifi and bluetooth.
If you needed more memory, the Topaz512 has 454 bytes.
For the tags that say "Need to Format First" - this means you have to use an Android phone to NDEF format the tags or have the seller format the tags for you, then it will work with the 8X.
