Anyone who had a windows phone 7 - 7.5 now using WP8 know how to get the pause/play forward/back buttons on the home screen?

Do You mean the Lockscreen? They will appear if You recently played some music.

Primarily you'll press the volume rocker while on the lock screen or Start screen to bring up the playback controls.

Am I forgetting how 7.5 worked, or has Music always disappeared from the volume rocker popup if you choose to watch a video clip for a moment, or even play a ring tone? I thought it persisted much more than it does now.

I think you could only get the controls when locked, so that works the same as now

yes you can, the lock screen will show the controls on the upper left

Yep the lock screen, and no even with music playing or recently played the only way to get the controls is by pressing the volume buttons. I still carry my Radar for that reason... Its safer while I'm driving.

My controls show automatically on my lock screen while playing music. As soon as I press the power button to wake the phone, the controls are there.

yes you can, the lock screen will show the controls on the upper left

lock screen =/= home screen. I do not remember WP7 having controls on the home screen.
