AMD Jaguar - a much needed aid to Windows 8 ?

I just finished reading anandtech's article ...

I just finished reading anandtech's article on AMD's new Jaguar architecture, and it made me realize that we are about to see a pretty significant reduction in power consumption on x86, which is very good news for Microsoft overall.

Most of the complaints about the Win 8 PRO hybrids/tablets has been either low performance (atom based), or low battery life (Intel Core based) ..

Take a look at this:

I don't think any of these need active cooling, but the A4-1200 tops at 3.9W TDP, and that is pretty much iPad form factor territory..

I am not sure how these will compare to the current Atom chips, but I doubt that they will be any slower. The AMD chips should also be cheaper than the Intel equivalent, which is essential for the tablet/hybrid market.

Let's hope that OEMs are willing to use AMD.. I am looking forward to Computex!

With that, and Intel's Haswell and Silvermont (baytrail) coming along as well... we are in for some really cool machines.

Hi, Been on this forum since the early WP7 days. Have the 822 and have just ordered the 928.

My problem seems to be IE10 and the back key. Starting a few days ago, when I try to go back from one screen to another; it will not do so. No manner of cussing, pounding on the keyboard or begging works.

I notice this happens mostly when I'm using Yahoo or when I'm using WPCentral and in the forum section. I am hesitant to read a posting because i'm afraid I can't go back to the posting screen without having to close IE10 and opening a new session in WPCentral.

I am not stating this is a problem caused by WPCentral; especially since it happens in other screens as well. I did a Bing search and found this to be a problem in some IE8 - IE10 systems. I'm running Win 8 on a Dell Lattitude Studio 17 laptop.

The only thing I have found that helps is to run "InPrivate" sessions. Even this doesn't stop the problem with the back key but does help a bit.

I have reset all setting in IE10 to default and the problem still exists.

Does anyone else have this problem or have suggestions as to how to cure it.

Thanks in advance,

Hidden things I found in Windows 8.1: Notifications and more

Here are some system files that I found in the "C:\Windows\System32" directory:

Here are some system files that I found in the "C:\Windows\System32" directory:

"SlideToShutDown.exe" - There were lots of compaints from people who couldn't figure out how to shutdown/restart there computer using Windows 8. From the name alone, it sounds like this might be a new way to shutdown your computer using touch. Maybe holding the power button like you would do with a Windows Phone, and then sliding the screen down to confirm the shutdown?

"phoneactivate.exe" - No idea what this could be, but this file doesn't exist in the current Windows 8 system. This file is new in Windows 8.1 and the name suggest it has something to do with phone integration. What the word "activate" implies is left unanswered.

Edit: Looked into the file's code. This file actually has to do with how the Windows 8.1 license is activated by telephone. My guess is that this helps fix some of the telephone exploits people were using to activate illegal copies of Windows 8. :)

"EmbeddedAppLauncher.exe" - Not too sure about this one. Might have to dig into the actual code this file contains, but it could potentially be related to the "Kiosk Mode" that will restrict the operating system to running one single app.

"EscSetup.exe" - "ESC" is an acronym for "Enterprise Client Sync". The icon for this file is the same as Skydrive. This is without a doubt the business version of Skydrive for business users. Businesses will be able to have their own private file storage which will make it easier to share and store files across the business.

"CloudNotifications.exe" - This is the most important file in my opinion. Since Microsoft is focusing on the entire ecosystem, chances are that Microsoft's solution to a notification center will be integrated across all devices in the cloud. This file is proof of that. To the Windows Phone users, this file explains why a notification center will not be coming in the GDR2 and GDR3 updates. A unified notification center is a lot more work, and the windows "blue" updates are the updates that are catering to ecosystem integration. The GDR updates are more focused on fixes and improvements, not new features.

Edit: Did some digging into the CloudNotifications code. The system works off of Skydrive and the settings are located in the new Metro Control Panel.

"wifidisplay.dll" - The obvious functionality of this file is native Wifi-Display integration. If the new Xbox supports Wifi-Display, we could be extending our metro apps on our phones and computers to our TV with ease in the near future.

I have not seen any articles mentioning any of these files/features, so I hope they helped give some ideas to what we can look forward to in the Windows 8.1 update. :)

I went to open Office2010 from my desktop today and it threw me for a loop that wasted a better part of my day. Opening the short cut opens an Office365 tab in IE, not full fledged web app mind you but an ad page. I can get to documents I had stored in the cloud before my $7 a month subscription disappeared(?). I looked in file explorer and could not find Word, Excel, PowerPoint or OneNote and OneNote has vanished from my taskbar.

I tried to do a repair from Programs in the control panel but it was getting stuck around 60% on the progress bar. Restart.. Combing through various forums I found I was able to download an image (having the product key; having the disc did me no favors as selecting repair put me in the same boat). After several tries using the download and several restarts I got the progress bar to fill in its entirety where it froze yet again. Restart.

I don't know why it occurred to me but I decided to search from the Start screen and behold! There are my prodigal Office applications, not linked to their shortcut on the desktop where they belong, not even in File Explorer but listed after many neutered metro/modern apps.

Microsoft, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for keeping me chained to my pc for the better part of the day and for no good reason. :P

Hi! I'm still getting used to Windows 8.

I have thousands upon thousands of photos I have stored on a NAS system from Synology.

It runs as a media server, and I thought I would easily find an app that can view the photos on a media server within the network, but have thus far been quite unhappy with what I've found.

Multimedia 8 works great for music, Press Play works great for videos, but so far I've found nothing for photos.

Anyone out there have something they can recommend?

So I don't use my desktop (older latop hooked up as a desktop) much to listen to music but I decided to today. I just noticed an issue that I don't know how to fix.

I opened up Xbox Music and started music. I then when back to desktop mode for Firefox and the music got quiet. I opened the music app back up and it got loud again. I did some searching and learned this something Microsoft changed. It is some type of feature that was meant to keep two separate apps from playing sounds loud at the same time. Question is, how do I turn this feature off? I have a 2 monitor setup so for now, I am just leaving the music app up on the secondary monitor and the desktop open on the other. I don't want to have to do this all the time.

Thanks for any help!

Microsoft was originally planing on having the New Xbox be online connected at all times to work; after the whole Adam Orth fiasco, Microsoft leads us to believe that this always online will be optional now so I started to think, "How could always online be useful?"

We know that the New Xbox will be running Windows 8 and that it will become our new DVRs. With Windows Blue (8.1) fast approaching which is rumored to make all of our Microsoft devices more connected I believe we will be able to do the following on Windows Phone 8: we will have the ability to steam recorded TV strait to WP8, possibly watch live TV, have access to a unified marketplace (Windows Store & Windows Store for Mobile.), having the ability to play Xbox Arcade Games on our phone and possibly, have the option to stream full retail games to our devices like OnLive with our Xbox acting as our server. I can now see why Microsoft would be pushing for a always online connected Xbox if they were heading in this direction.

Some of you might ask yourselves how on earth would you play a full retail game on a touch screen, well I believe the new Xbox controller will be compatible with all devices, not just Xbox.

In conclusion, if WP8 is this tightly integrated will the Xbox, I believe this will be a massive game changer and will be seeing a lot more WP8s in the wild.

Thanks for reading and I look forward to hearing your thoughts and prediction.

Weather Station – The only Weather App that you will ever need

As the name suggests, Weather Station (http://apps.microsoft.com/windows/en-us/app/weather-station/8b5baca5-0951-463d-8a15-308ebd11ca27) is an app...

As the name suggests, Weather Station is an app which provides users with access to a network of more than 50,000 weather stations in more than 100 countries across the world.

All weather conditions are updated in real time and provides users with information including – temperature, wind speed, wind direction, humidity, precipitation and many more.

More importantly, most weather apps only provide users with a blanket weather condition for a particular city, for example New York. What Weather Station does differently however is to provide users with data specific to a particular area that they are in, for example New York City (East Village). Given the size of New York, we all know that it could be rainy at one end of the city while being bright and sunny on the other. Hence the Weather Station provides users with the accuracy they would not otherwise get, and more importantly reducing the possibility of getting caught in the rain!

Future updates planned for the current version will include weather forecasts and ability for users to tell where the nearest weather stations are. Weather Station is currently free for download. Users will be given a 3 days trial period before receiving an option to purchase for USD 0.99. A definite bargain for the functionalities and convenience it brings.

Weather Station was created by Mr. Nikola Stepan, who also develops mobile apps for iOS and the Windows Phone. His reason of choice to develop for the Windows 8 platform was because Windows is the leading OS for desktop computing and he believes it will continue to prosper. Mr. Stepan is currently working on a new app called “Calcsharp” which evaluates mathematical expressions step by step. He is unable to share more about it at the current juncture, but if the quality is as anywhere as good as the Weather Station, we will definitely be waiting for it great anticipation.

Lastly, it is also interesting to note that Weather Station is currently using a 3rd party commerce platform, Lotaris in-appCommerce to power the business models and payments of Weather Station on the Windows Store.

When asked, Mr. Stepan mentioned that Lotaris in-appCommerce “provides him with the best financial deal and also some marketing/promotions of his app which he believes will increase his monetization abilities moving forward.”

About Mr. Nikola Stepan
Mr. Nikola Stepan is from Varaždin, Croatia. He graduated in Computer Science and currently works as a C# developer in a good company. Microsoft Prepares U-Turn on Windows 8

Microsoft is preparing to reverse course over key elements of its Windows 8 operating system, marking one of the most prominent admissions of failure for a new mass-market consumer product since Coca Cola's New Coke fiasco nearly 30 years ago.

"Key aspects" of how the software is used will be changed when Microsoft releases an updated version of the operating system this year, Tammy Reller, head of marketing and finance for the Windows business, said in an interview with the Financial Times. Referring to difficulties many users have had with mastering the software, she added: "The learning curve is definitely real."

Analysts warned that changing course would be a significant admission of failure for Steve Ballmer, chief executive, who called the October launch of Windows 8 a "bet-the-company" moment as Microsoft sought to respond to the success of Apple'siPad.

"It's a horrible thing for this to happen to your flagship product – he'll take a hit for that," said Mark Anderson, an independent tech analyst. "But he's also responsible for a renaissance inside the company. There's a level of risk and creativity going on that would never have happened two years ago."

Richard Doherty, analyst at tech research firm Envisioneering, said: "This is like New Coke, going on for seven months – only Coke listened better." Coca-Cola dropped its New Coke formula in response to a consumer backlash less than three months after launch.

Windows 8 was an ambitious attempt to update the personal computer for the tablet era by moving to a new touchscreen interface based on colorful tiles, hiding the "desktop" launch screen familiar to white collar workers and consumers around the world.

The combination PC and tablet software was widely panned by reviewers and has been blamed by some analysts for worsening the slump in sales that has rocked the PC industry. Even before its launch, Tim Cook, chief executive of Apple, said Windows 8 would be like combining a toaster and a fridge – something that, while technically possible, was "probably not going to be pleasing to the user".

Ms Reller refused to reveal details of the changes Microsoft would make to Windows 8. However, the clamor from reviewers has become overwhelming for a return to a more familiar PC interface. Ms Reller said PC users had faced difficulties adapting to the new software.

I've noticed that all the great windows 8 commercials show beautiful Pinned tiles for internet explorer websites. Most notable for me is Outlook.com. Can anyone tell me why my Pinned tile for Outlook.com isn't that same as the one on the commercial? Can you change these in any way? Maybe using something like Obly Tile? Anyone else disappointed with Pinned sites?

On another note, can you remove frequent sites from the IE10 UI? Its more history than frequent and I want quick access to favorites without sliding.
