Surface cracked glass and Extended Warranty Info

So, the unthinkable happened. I discovered a crack in the glass of my Surface RT. We take really good care of it and have no idea how it happened....

So, the unthinkable happened. I discovered a crack in the glass of my Surface RT. We take really good care of it and have no idea how it happened. The crack was on the right side of the screen, on the bezel, starting from the case, curving out towards the bezel and back down to the case. I don't have it anymore so I can't take a picture. Anyway, looked like a pressure crack from where you might hold it with your thumbs and it seemed like a product failure to me.

I purchased the extended warranty at the same time in a Microsoft Store. I think there are several warranty names floating around: Microsoft Assure or Complete and there may be for surface, for tablet or for smartphone. Mine says Microsoft Assure for tablet. When I purchased, the sales guy said get this warranty and you're covered - good to go. So, I called the warranty number and learn there's a $50 deductible for any claim, which was news to me. I had never heard of that. I looked through the fine print in my documentation and it said there was only a deductible "for smartphone only. All other devices there is no deductible." The guy on the phone was like, "yea, it's considered the same thing." Ummmm...no, it's not the same thing, and the documentation explicitly says so.

Regardless of what anyone tells you, there IS a $50 deductible for each Surface claim, and you can have two claims in a two year period. Between various employees and documentation, it's very unclear as to what the limitations are. I was even told getting the extended warranty would extend things to three years, which is not the case.

I was really unhappy with the situation (and lengthy phone call), so I went to where I purchased the Surface, explained the situation to the manager and he handed me a new Surface. He also wiped my old one and verified the data was gone while I was standing there. Excellent service and totally gave me a positive experience.

Here's the official deal:
$50 deductible for each claim as long as it can be deemed "accidental"
Two claims in a two year period - they should just say two claims total.
Two year extended warranty
Two year manufacturers warranty - if the camera won't work or you get some dead pixels
Using the extended or manufacturers warranty can be used separately.

Clear as mud? Hope this is helpful for someone going forward.

Can I not pin anything to the screen from the music app?

It's frustrating enough on my 8x that I need to have at least one song by an artist phycially on my phone to pin it, (why can't I pin anybody especially as an xbox music subscriber!?) but to not be able to at all? that's just absurd, please tell me I'm overlooking something.

Does anyone else experience jerky scrolling when on the main screen for Xbox Video, Music and Games?

The homepages are incredibly jerky on my Surface and not smooth at all. I can switch over to Bing News and scrolling remains smooth and consistent throughout the app but the other apps have a noticeable problem. However, scrolling is nice and smooth once I click into a category like movies store > or the windows games store. It's just the main screen that's jerky.

So I just got my Surface RT over the weekend and it's great. But one thing that's been leaving me puzzled is the apparent lack of text suggestions while using the on-screen keyboard. I can clearly see an toggle for this feature in the settings, and I have it turned on. However, I never see them pop up... am I doing something wrong?

One of the biggest complaints I've heard from people about the RT is the lack of legacy app support on RT and small windows store.

If you are holding off because of this, let me tell you that it's foolish to discount it for that reason.

If you have a home PC that's hooked up to the internet, there's no reason to not get a surfaceRT.

Remote-in from anywhere, watch videos streaming in 1080p/use any program that you want all in a fluid motion. If you have win8 on your pc then enable touch when you leave it and take advantage of the surface's fantastic touch UI.

Let's have a discussion about the great advantages of remote-in and create a FAQ for people interested in it :)

I can attest to the amazing ability of running off of mobile internet wifi and running whatever you want/streaming whatever you want/doing whatever you want from anywhere.

Tip #1:
Enable the classic keyboard layout.
Swipe in from the right for your charms, tap “Change PC settings”, and tap general. Flip the “Standard keyboard layout” toggle:

Then pull up the onscreen keyboard and tap the “keyboard layouts” button:

Select your new fourth option and you get this:

It’s great for data entry when you have both letters and numbers so you don’t have to switch back and forth. Not as conducive for typing because the keys are smaller.
Tip #2:
Get 4 rows of tiles and more screen real estate. Only recommended if you have decent eyes!
Open regedit (Start -> type regedit)
Browse to:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
Right click on Explorer, open the New menu, and click “Key”
Name it “Scaling”
Create a new String value, and enter these values:
Value name: MonitorSize
Value data: 13.1
You can select several different values (14.1, 15.1), play around with it and see what it looks like and what you like.
In the end it will look like this:
registry.png
The end result looks like this (for 13.1)

Enjoy your sharper looking screen and more spacious start screen. It’s a really nice change for me.

I tried the cheap adaptor micro HDMI to VGA but the screen becomes unresponsive
I had the adaptor micro HDMI to HDMI and it's working great when connecting to LCD but i wonder if i can use the converter from HDMI to VGA to use for projector, anyone try this? Just afraid that it's not enough power supply for the converter in this way

Hope there is a solution, just want to use the surface in working and the need for connecting to projector is mandatory

So it seems my school uses cafescribe formats and I was wondering if there was a compatible app in the Store for the RT (I couldn't find any)? I was also wondering what are the benefits (besides the obvious "I don't have to carry around a heavy book") of going digital? If I rent, can I read these offline or do I need an internet connection just to access?

Hey all - just thought I'd share a new experience I just had with my Surface RT - was scrolling through the Google Chrome web store (on my PC, because god forbid Google support Microsoft in any way....not to mention that without Microsoft, google probably wouldn't exist), and noticed that all of the Chrome Web apps have a web link associated with them. I was curious if this was a direct link to the web app, or something else - well either way, they work in the IE10 browser on the Surface RT as well.

Apps that I have been looking for for a while - I really no longer need (as long as im connected to the web that is - which is basically the same thing as using a chromebook I guess)

Some good links for web apps that you can pin to your start screen, that offer some added functionality - there are many, many more......explore, and see which ones work for you:

Photoshop tools - basically the same as the Photoshop Express app on an Ipad, or Android tablet
Photo Editor, Online Photo Editor, Photoshop Express | Photoshop.com

AutoCAD WS - Again - Ive been looking for this app to come to the Windows Store to no avail.....don't need it anymore (that being said, I could just use remote desktop and have full CAD...but the fact that it is working in a web based browser there is no reason why Autodesk shouldn't release an offline version for Windows 8
https://www.autocadws.com/login

Pixlr - this is way better than any mobile app - comparable to a slightly stripped down version of photoshop - again, maybe I could just use remote desktop and use Photoshop from my PC at work / home.....but gives some people an option other than the stripped down touch based apps in the store.
Photo editor online / free image editing direct in your browser - Pixlr.com

Hey there everyone! So I'm a junior in college and I want a new device and my main thing is lightness. I just got into business school and I am concentrating in consulting and finance so I want a device that I can take to all my classes, take notes on, and use PowerPoint and excel. I NEED PowerPoint because, for those not familiar, consulting is all presentations. Anyway the surface r/t looks great because it has what I am looking for but I really want the pen that's included with the pro. I just like the idea of using one note and typing and when I have a formula/math/annotation to make I can just use the pen. I don't want to spring for the pro because of the extra weight, heat, and battery life. Not to mention I don't care about running legacy programs because honestly all I use my computer for is web browsing and office for homework. If r/t just had the pen it would be perfect!

On this note, I don't know why all the reviews are so negative and bash the surface, are journalists not intelligent enough to grasp that a tablet that you can work on is a good idea? Personally I think it's a really cool device.

So basically I don't know what to get, should I just get the pro, the r/t, wait for the r/t 2 and hope they include the pen, or is there another device you might know of that would fit my needs? Any advice would be awesome and thanks so much!
